Concept Statement
This design was all about storytelling. Storytelling about this small community of Southeastern Ohio. My first step in this project was to learn more about this remote area and its significance. It was the original gateway to the Northwest territory this community had a major impact in rail transport connecting railroad lines to larger cities including Cincinnati, Chicago and Detroit. I ideated on this nugget of history and its significance and decided the design needed a Train Depot theme.
I started the design by evaluating the human experience and the space and layout for patrons and workers alike. My design maintains a circular pattern to help servers transverse to various stations throughout the space so they can easily access their guests and serve them while providing guests with a more intimate dining experience.
I wanted an authentic experience, therefore, I ensured the restaurant’s design took patrons back to the days-gone-by, immersing them in an authentic, historical, and unique environment that will attract the local people of this Southeastern Ohio community.
The design incorporates Environmental Graphic Design by providing visual aspects of wayfinding in its signage and connecting people to the local context, history and culture to the area. The signage for the take-out and waiting area closely depicts a train depot ticket booth and coupled with that, the interior pieces such as benches and crates give it a rustic, authentic feel of a train depot. The restaurant will use locally sourced materials and food, while supporting the local economy, it also provides a farm-to-table experience.
The design tells a story, from the entry into the depot, or while waiting to be seated, with an interior that comes together providing patrons with an engaging space that flows and is comfortable for meals and conversation.
